Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi

Jessica Peterson

It has long been my desire to visit Dubai. Well, ever since I learned this boon city constructed its own islands…And built the world’s tallest building. Dubai breaks the record for well, breaking records. And not in the gaudy Vegas sense — always in style with a spicy dollop of Arabic culture on top.

My husband and I plus two friends spent only a week in the United Arab Emirates, but being the minimalist that I am, I took 1,300 pictures. Stay tuned,  as this is the first of many posts.

Grand Mosque

Grand Mosque is actually in Abu Dhabi, the older and richer capitol of the UAE. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan Mosque is only the third largest mosque in the world, but it is rumored to be at the top of the expense chain. Swarovski crystal chandeliers, 24-carat gold plated pillars, and the largest Persian carpet in the world adorn this domed jewel of the desert.

Islamic custom dictates that women be covered head to toe to enter the mosque. On a cloudless, 90-degree day at noon, I felt like  Tandoori chicken, but the experience was totally worth the price of admission. I just asked myself, What would Jackie O wear? And yes, I did intend for my outfit to match my monument, thankyouverymuch.

  • These are amazing photos. As a resident of Abu Dhabi, I am able to see this beauty daily.

    • Thank you. How lovely it must be to live in Abu Dhabi!

  • Wow! Your pictures are stunning! This is a truly magnificent monument! Kind of reminds me the Taj Mahal, or princess Jasmine’s palace.. 😀
It’s too bad that, quite honestly I have no interest whatsoever in going there. I don’t like the UAE’s culture of consumerism and being flashy and building outrageous cities in deserts.. We have a layover in Abu Dhabi next month, but we won’t be leaving the airport.
Nonetheless, I can imagine that the week you spent there was very interesting!

  • For a person who has been to Dubai several times in a year, it is a shame that I haven’t been to Grand Mosque yet. I was in Abu Dhabi before it was constructed. I loved your pictures and your outfit. So classy and just what Jackie would wear.

  • I have recently been to Abu Dhabi but just in a layover and I didn’t have time to leave the airport. However, I did spot a little bit of the beauty of the city from the plane. The White Mosque is really impressive and you have captured some beautiful details. I would love to visit next time I’m around and maybe spend more time there.

  • The mosque has splendid architecture and beautiful pictures. We were supposed to visit Abu Dhabi last week but due to delay in transit visa processing we were unable to visit. By the way lovely dress and stunning pictures.

The intricate detail always amazes me. So much work must go into these creations. I’d hate to think of the true cost behind the building of a mosque like this!

I’ve been to Dubai but not to Abu Dhabi (except for the airport). The more photos I see of this beautiful mosque, the more I want to go to it. It is just so spectacular.

I have worked in Dubai for a couple of years, but somehow never managed to make it to AD. The mosque looks stunning and I guess I will land in AD when i visit UAE this time. Is there a dress code>

  • Kathy James

Wow your style is as beautiful as the Mosque itself. Gorgeous!
I have only ever been to Abu Dhabi airport however I would consider taking a longer lay over to visit this beautiful Mosque. Thank you for sharing.

  • Wow! Seriously! I could lose hours in the Grand Mosque. I love that you showed lots of the details. Gorgeous pictures and I look forward to seeing some more of the 1300 😀
