Grand Mosque, Abu Dhabi
It has long been my desire to visit Dubai. Well, ever since I learned this boon city constructed its own islands…And built the world’s tallest building. Dubai breaks the record for well, breaking records. And not in the gaudy Vegas sense — always in style with a spicy dollop of Arabic culture on top.
My husband and I plus two friends spent only a week in the United Arab Emirates, but being the minimalist that I am, I took 1,300 pictures. Stay tuned, as this is the first of many posts.
Grand Mosque is actually in Abu Dhabi, the older and richer capitol of the UAE. Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan al-Nahyan Mosque is only the third largest mosque in the world, but it is rumored to be at the top of the expense chain. Swarovski crystal chandeliers, 24-carat gold plated pillars, and the largest Persian carpet in the world adorn this domed jewel of the desert.
Islamic custom dictates that women be covered head to toe to enter the mosque. On a cloudless, 90-degree day at noon, I felt like Tandoori chicken, but the experience was totally worth the price of admission. I just asked myself, What would Jackie O wear? And yes, I did intend for my outfit to match my monument, thankyouverymuch.
