Watch my CNN Great Big Story Documentary
Hidden among the homes and businesses of Compton sits an unlikely stable. At Compton Jr. Posse, kids from the neighborhood learn to ride and care for horses. They also compete in serious events. Shola Oyefeso, a member of the group, says she’s proud to ride for Compton, and though the horses are donated, that doesn’t change the bond riders have with them.
This is a documentary short I directed and produced for CNN’s Great Big Story. The Hubs and I shot this a few months ago in Compton, Malibu, and Pasadena. It was a pretty challenging run-and-gun situation with dust kicking into my eyes and making them water the whole time. However, I loved working with the kids and horses of Compton Jr. Posse. The staff was incredibly gracious as well. Our subject, Shola Oyefeso, is a remarkable 17-year-old who was juggling her final month of high school, a riding competition, and an after school job. This two-minute doc is hardly enough to get to know her, but it’s a great introduction to a worthy organization.
