Make no mistake. I know what a tropical paradise looks like. I live on an unspoiled island just two minutes from a protected marine preserve. And yet, for a second time I am completely inspired by the sleepy mountain-top village of Kuranda in Tropical North Queensland, Australia. United Airlines sent me to Cairns to document this pristine eco destination.

Kuranda is pretty much the most touristy thing you can do around Cairns, yet it’s also one of the most beautiful. Take the Skyrail for panoramic views. Lower your shoulders and sink into the serenity that is Kuranda, a hippie village-slash-nature preserve.

I was little bummed that Batreach, a bat rehab center, was closed for the day. My last trip to Cairns allowed me to get up close with these furry and misunderstood creatures and I sort of fell in love with them. Cairns is the place to see bats, from the Kuranda rain forest to the city proper.

When you’re not admiring the thunderous Barron Falls, you’ll be communing with butterflies or starting a didgeridoo collection. There’s something for everyone. You’ll take the Kuranda Scenic Railway back down the mountain. Construction of the railway began in 1882 and was completed as far as Kuranda in 1891. Casualties were many as 15 hand-made tunnels and 37 bridges were built to climb from sea level to 328 meters up the Macalister Range. I love the nostalgia of taking a train.
